Doxycycline is classified as a tetracycline antibiotic used for slowing the growth of bacteria in a human body. Doxycycline is prescribed by doctors across the world to treat many different bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis (which is a gum disease) and more. Other than that, it is also used to treat blemishes, bumps and acne like lesions which is often caused by rosacea. For the treatment of certain amoeba infections, doxycycline can be used in combination with some other medicines. Important Information about doxycycline
The use of doxycycline is prohibited for pregnant patients as it could harm the unborn baby which could result in permanent discoloration of the teeth later in life. It also makes the birth control pills less effective. It is recommended that one should use a second method of birth control while they are taking doxycycline. It also passes into breast milk and can also affect the bone and teeth development of an infant. It is highly recommended that one should consult a doctor before taking the medicine.
Other than that, it should be noted that the use of doxycycline is not recommened if someone is allergic to it or to similar medicines such as demeclocycline (Declomycin), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Vectrin), or tetracycline (Brodspec, Panmycin, Sumycin, Tetracap).
It should also not be used by children younger than 8 years in age as it could cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth and can also affect a child’s growth. In addition, expired medication should be discarded as they can damage the kidneys of a person.
